| Protokol |
Protokol is the means by which Patrick Arnold expresses his unique take on electronic music. The music is a reflection of a broad spectrum of musical influences and ideas that have fermented over a decade.
Initial interests in electronic music were ignited at the age of 7 by the release of the massive attack album 'Blue Lines'. From there it was a steady progression through musical styles, of which the Big Beat movement played a major role. Other genres included old school east coast hiphop, jazz, acid jazz and triphop.
Since 'Exit Planet Dust' Chemical Brothers played the most significant role in shaping the music to come from Protokol. This was due to their ability to seamlessly blend their interest in hiphop with electronic music. It was this meshing of genres and its success that sparked the obsession of electronic music.
In 2000 a pair of technics 1200's came into the bedroom and Patrick started playing every weekend at any house party he could find. Initially spinning breaks and funk he then had a slight fling with trance which nevertheless played its roll in defining his later music. After being less and less interested with the mainstream music scene and dj'ing the decks were put to rest and then sold to pay for production tools.
2004 to 2007 (the build up phase) consisted of on and off experimentation with production as well as teaching himself piano and then later guitar. in 2008 he found himself with more time away from uni and started putting all his time into the studio. Over the year productions came out in the form of minimal, big beat, electro-house, breaks and house. The evident over-diversity became the number one issue to tackle and so much like the chemical brothers, the meshing of styles began.
Ultimately the music is still taking shape to become a style that is unique, moving and gets people dancing. Further, because of influences by acts like chemical brothers and fatboy slim, the dream is that Protokol's music can be taken onto stage and entertain festival crowds.
